Impact of a domestic wastewater treatment plant on groundwater pollution, north Jordan

چکیده
An assessment of groundwater pollution in the area surrounding a domestic wastewater treatment plant in northern Jordan has been carried out. Groundwater in the study area is classified as alkaline earth water with increased portions of alkalis and prevailing chloride, tending to shift to alkaline water with the dominance of chloride. This trend indicates mixing between the two end members of fresh Ca2+-HCO3 water and saline Na+-Cl water. Spatially, the highest concentrations of the hydrochemical parameters were found in close proximity of the Al Ramtha Wastewater Treatment Plant (RWWTP). Nitrate, which is the most common human-introduced pollutant into groundwater resources, was used to evaluate pollution of phreatic groundwater in the study area. Its concentration (as NO3) ranges between 1 mg/L and 366 mg/L, with an average of 79 mg/L. A total of 71% of the samples present nitrate concentrations exceeding the threshold value for anthropogenic sources (20 mg/L), and more than 50% in excess of World Health Organization (WHO) standards for drinking water (50 mg/L). The most important factors affecting the magnitude of groundwater pollution are depth to groundwater table, aquifer transmissivity (hydraulic conductivity), lineaments density, and distance from treatment plant with calculated correlation coefficients of -0.51, 0.65, 0.70, and -0.75 to nitrate concentration, respectively.

The increase of nitrite and nitrate concentrations in surface and groundwater is a greatconcern in our lives nowadays. Nitrate and nitrite in drinking water normally originate fromagricultural operation and chemical fertilizers. Therefore, the present study aims toinvestigate the effect of nitrogen fertilizers used in rice cultivation and levels of nitrate andnitrite in farm wastewater and wate...

Wadi Gaza natural reserve in Palestine is exposed to aggressive pollution activities in the form of disposing huge amounts of wastewater and solid waste a long its bed. This study was initiated to investigate the extent to which the environment of Wadi Gaza has been damaged due to these activities. The specific environmental elements investigated in this work were: groundwater, soil, and sea wa...

This paper presents considerations for the application of the natural water isotope method on catchment areas. For the estimation of the amount of infiltration and inflow in sewer systems the paper shows two applications in the Netherlands: one successful application on a relatively small catchment area with a simple geo-hydrological groundwater system and one unsuccessful application in an are...
متن کاملAssessment and Mapping of Groundwater Vulnerability Using SAR Concentrations and GIS: A Case Study in Al-Mafraq, Jordan
Groundwater is the main source of water supply in Jordan. Due to lower precipitation rates in recent years, the surface water is increasingly limited. Research on groundwater vulnerability helps protect this main source of water supply and assists in the development of plans to confront the deterioration and contamination of aquifers from wastewater and agricultural activities in order to prote...
متن کاملWastewater quality relationships with reuse options.
The trend towards reuse of effluent for land application of domestic and industrial wastewater is driven by the need to maximise limited water resources and benefit from the plant nutrients available in the effluent. Of significant impact upon the value of the wastewater for reuse is its chemical properties as well as biochemical oxygen demand and suspended solids. While the sewage treatment pl...
